How specialist mentoring support can help you

The purpose of a Specialist Mentor is to support you in accessing your studies:

  • Develop a support programme to facilitate the growth of your independence, reducing the need for support in the longer term.
  • Understand what is required academically, but not  subject-specific support or tutoring
  • Identify barriers to learning and help you work on strategies, but not therapeutic support relating to your condition (so it’s different to counselling)
  • Develop effective organisation and time management skills and strategies to manage workload and deadlines.
  • Prioritise tasks and set realistic goals, including creating work plans and achievable targets.
  • Identify solutions to problems, and support you with these, helping you to develop skills rather than providing advocacy.

““To be able to have someone to listen and confide in has been an amazing support. They understand. They have given me so much support and confidence...Priceless.””

Other providers of specialist study skills support and mentoring

Your DSA Needs Assessor will allocate you to a provider for your Specialist Study Skills Support and Mentoring. You can ask for in person or remote support. Your provider might be Oxford Brookes or an external provider. If you have support provided through an external provider, for example a British Sign Language Interpreter or Specialist Notetaker we can help ensure they have access to your teaching.

Oxford Brookes provision is registered with the Department of Education (DfE) and as such we are bound by their standards for Non-Medical Help Providers. If we are not in a position to allocate you to a Tutor or Mentor after 2 weeks we will advise you about referring you to another provider.

Please note, we are unable to accommodate more than two mentoring/Specialist Study Skills sessions per week but will support any students who may require more to find an alternative supplier.
