Patrick Esser

Role

Dr Esser, Reader, is the Director of the Centre for Movement, Occupation and Rehabilitation Sciences (MORES) and Knowledge Exchange Lead for the Faculty of Health, Science & Technology at Oxford Brookes University.

As MOReS Director, Dr Esser leads the Movement Science theme, overseeing a multidisciplinary team dedicated to developing bespoke hardware and software for clinical and real-world rehabilitation. Under his leadership, MOReS secured membership in the WHO's HEPA Europe Network (Feb 2024). 

Dr Esser combines a varied engineering background with clinical biomechanics expertise to lead MOReS in delivering impactful movement and rehabilitation research. With a strong publication record, national steering roles, med-tech innovation leadership, and pedagogical commitment, he significantly advances both academic and applied health science

Patrick contributes to national and regional research strategy through his roles on multiple steering committees, including the Oxford Institute of Applied Health Research (OxInAHR) and the Alzheimer's Research UK Thames Valley Network Centre. He plays a key role in knowledge exchange and innovation as a member of the Faculty Innovation Team, and serves as an Academic Advisor to national initiatives such as the NHS Secure Data Environment initiative. In this capacity, he also supports small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) through Innovation UK-funded health technology and data science programmes.
