"As a parent of a Oxford Brookes graduate, I feel both privileged and proud to be the Chair of the University's Board of Governors. As an institution, we have been transforming lives for over 150 years and we are dedicated to continue doing so in the future.

Our ethos has always been to focus our efforts and expertise in practical ways. From our early days as Oxford School of Art, as Oxford College of Technology and then Oxford Polytechnic, and including Lady Spencer-Churchill College and Westminster College - our students and staff have made a real, tangible difference to the world.

Looking to the future, I am committed to ensuring that Brookes can continue making a positive difference. We are investing in high-quality facilities, conducting and implementing high-quality research and striving to give the best possible experience, opportunities and support to all of our students.

Oxford Brookes is an inspiring community to be part of but we need your support to help us achieve all that we want to do and to keep on adapting, responding to and supporting the needs of a changing world.

It is for this reason that I have made the important decision to leave a gift in my Will to Brookes. I invite you to do the same and join me in ensuring the legacy of John Henry Brookes for years to come."

- John Zealley, Chair of the Board of Governors, Oxford Brookes University

Why a gift in your Will is so important

Having an up-to-date Will ensures your wishes are carried out after you die. It ensures your values and principles live on and compels your loved ones to think about what matters to you. A Will is often one of the greatest contributions you can make to the lives of the people you care about and the causes that are closest to your heart.

Your gift of transformative learning

Of course, many people will want to ensure their friends and family are provided for first. However, after that, leaving even a small percentage of your estate can make a profound difference to future generations of students. These gifts create life-changing opportunities, opening doors to education, innovation, and discovery. A legacy left to Oxford Brookes enables us to continue to invest in transformative support for students, ambitious facilities and impactful research, ensuring our commitment to excellence continues for years to come.

How you will be remembered

By pledging a gift to Oxford Brookes University, you can also be remembered as someone who believed in the power of education to change lives.

“My legacy to Oxford Brookes is a thank you for the profound impact the University has had on my life. It is also a gift to support the education of future students so that, like me, they too will be inspired.”

John Green, Alumnus

Legacy gift case study: The Tessa Jane Evans Bursary for Nursing

Tessa Jane Evans was a staff nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital and a student at Oxford Brookes. She tragically died in 1998, aged 24. Tessa, known to her family and friends as ‘Tess’, was the only child of Mrs Margaret Evans.

Margaret passed away in 2015 and very generously left a gift in her Will to set up a bursary in the name of her daughter. Each year this gift enables three new students, who otherwise may not be able to afford it, to study Adult Nursing.

Tess was described as “a wonderful nurse”. Her mother’s generosity is helping a new generation of nurses to fund their studies, enter the profession as graduates and make a lasting difference through careers of care and compassion.

"This legacy will help nursing students in need to meet living costs. This will make an enormous difference to them and will also ultimately benefit patients in the future." - Dr Liz Westcott, Head of Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery
